Cleveland Hungarian Museum

Welcome to our Online Collections Database!

OUR MISSION is to preserve Hungarian culture and the history of Hungarians in Northeast Ohio so that present and future generations can draw upon its collections for education, inspiration and enrichment.

Since its founding in 1985, the Museum has been entrusted with Hungarian cultural, artistic, historical, and literary items which help us carry out our mission and allows us to create exhibits, sponsor cultural and educational activities, and maintain an extensive library for enrichment and research purposes.

We maintain an inventory of all our donated items in various Collections. We will be sharing selected information from our Collections in this searchable online database, adding items in an ongoing process. As this will take some time to complete, we encourage visitors and researchers to check back often.

This ONLINE COLLECTIONS DATABASE gives the Museum the opportunity to present its Collections to a broad and varied audience. The record describing each item is presented in one of the following Catalogs: Archives, Photos, Libraries. or Objects.

Donations to the Museum

We have great interest in adding to our Collections objects that helps us promote our mission of preserving articles representing Hungarian culture, and items relating to the culture and history of Hungarians in America, with special emphasis on northeast Ohio.

The Hungarian Museum accepts donations of items from Hungarian or Hungarian American life and culture, including fine art paintings and prints, authentic folk costumes, crafts, embroideries and other needlework, ceramics and pottery, books, photographs, and other documents. For information on making donations to the Museum and to download the Donation Form, please visit our website.

Tips for Searching in Database

Random Images button is a great way to browse in the entire Collection online. Each page displays an assortment of images. If something peaks your interest, click the hyperlink below the image to view the record.

Keyword Search button lets you search across multiple fields for any catalog records online. The default connector between words is OR (e.g. a search for Margaret Bridge will return records associated with Margaret OR Bridge). To find records where both keywords are found, type AND between the two words. To search for a specific phrase, put the phrase between quotes (e.g. "St. Margaret Island"). Use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard (e.g. a search for histor* would come up with records containing history, histories, historical, etc.). Searches are not case sensitive.

Catalog Search: Archives, Photos, Libraries, and Objects buttons let you browse records within each catalog without performing a search. Narrow down your search by only searching within a selected catalog. To search only for Photos, click the Photos button and type in your keyword(s) or phrase. Phrase searching, wildcards (*) as well as AND/OR statements are available when performing catalog searches.

Advanced Search lets you include a variety of details and is most helpful when you know specifics about the item(s) you are searching for.

Thank You!
